Two things stack up against a straight opener install here: the age of the housing and the cold. With most of the service area's homes dating to the 1938-1973 window across the eleven communities we cover, garages were framed for a manual door, not a motorized one. Header boards are often single 2x6 or 2x8 stock with no reinforcement, which is fine for a spring-and-pulley system but not for the repeated pull of a chain or belt drive.
The climate here is cold with moderate swings, and that matters for opener installs specifically because cold-stiffened lubricant on old rollers and hinges puts extra strain on the opener's gears the first winter after install. An opener sized and set up correctly accounts for that resistance; one installed without adjusting the travel limits and force settings for a stiff, aging door will trip its safety reverse constantly or strip a gear by February.
This isn't a problem unique to one street or one subdivision - it shows up across the pre-1960 stock we see throughout the area we serve, from the closest towns in to the farther ones. The fix isn't a stronger motor. It's matching the opener's mount hardware and force settings to a door and header that were never built with a motor in mind.
