Most of the housing across this service area went up between 1938 and 1973, with a median build year around 1957, and that stock is concentrated pre-1960 across the eleven communities we work in. Doors and openers on houses that old have usually been replaced at least once, but the cable and drum hardware often isn't matched to the door weight after a panel swap or an insulation retrofit added mass to the door. That mismatch is what shortens cable life - not age alone.
The region also sits in a cold, moderate climate band, which means real freeze-thaw cycling every winter. Cable strands corrode from the inside where moisture works into the wound section at the drum, and you don't see it until a strand starts to give. On a lot of these older houses, the track and drum assembly is original or close to it, sized for a lighter door than what's currently hanging. Combine an aging cable, a heavier retrofit door, and a winter freeze-thaw cycle, and you get the failure pattern we see over and over: a cable that looks fine from the ground until the day it isn't.
